What Is Oceanside Music?

Our Organization

Founded in 1966, Oceanside Music is a registered charitable society dedicated to enriching the Oceanside community of Vancouver Island. Guided by our Constitution, we actively support a diverse range of youth and adult vocal and instrumental community music groups, bringing a rich variety of musical styles and genres to local audiences throughout the year.

Ann Barber Becqué

Ann grew up in a musical family studying piano, violin, guitar, and voice. She earned her Teacher’s Associateship in piano (Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto) and Bachelor and Master of Music Education from the University of Victoria. Ann has taught various music subjects and directed and performed with many vocal and instrumental groups. Today, Ann is the Musical Director for Oceanside Music’s Concert Choir and Consort A Capella Singers.

Carole Baker

Carole Baker is a retired educator with 32 years of teaching experience, primarily in the Coquitlam School District. As a music educator, she taught choir, vocal jazz, band and jazz band to students in grades 9 through 12 that performed both locally and abroad. She was also Music Director of 19 school musicals, overseeing all the vocal work and directing the pit bands for each musical.

Ed Dumas, M.A.Ed., is a retired music educator and band conductor with over 40 years of experience. He has taught in Maple Ridge, BC, and conducted multiple bands, including the Maple Ridge Concert Band. Ed now lives in Parksville, BC, where he continues to conduct and play trumpet.

The History of Oceanside Music

Originally registered as the Parksville District Music Association in 1966, our charitable society has proudly served the Oceanside communities of Vancouver Island, Canada, for generations.

Throughout our history, we have remained steadfastly committed to the foundational objectives set out in our Constitution:

Foster & Develop: Cultivating local talent in both instrumental and vocal music.
Promote & Sponsor: Supporting the performing arts and allied creative disciplines.
Engage: Building public appreciation and community interest in the musical arts.

Oceanside Music in 2024

2024 – A New Era

In 2024, our society rebranded as Oceanside Music, marking an exciting new chapter in our history. Today, we are proud to support 7 community musical groups that welcome youth and adult singers and musicians of all skill levels and backgrounds.

Our Musical Community: Over 200 members strong, drawing talent from Nanaimo and across the Oceanside communities of Vancouver Island (Nanoose, Parksville, Qualicum, and Deep Bay).
Our Performances: Throughout the year, our singers and musicians deliver beautifully synergized vocal and instrumental concerts, showcasing skillfully curated music spanning a wide variety of eras and genres.

Annual General Meetings

Every May, Oceanside Music Members can attend the Annual General Meeting, where the Board presents a comprehensive overview of the past fiscal year’s activities and budget. Members learn about the vision for the next fiscal year, new elected Board Members, and share their perspectives on the Association’s future.

Oceanside Music Membership

Oceanside Music’s membership includes Members and Associate Members. Both types of Members pay an annual fee determined by the Board of Directors. This fee is in support of concerts, educational programs, and community outreach initiatives. The Board reviews these fees annually to meet the organization’s needs.

Acknowledgments

Oceanside Music would like to acknowledge past and current Board Members, performers, members, Musical Directors, sponsors, volunteers, audiences, businesses, and the many community partnerships that have served, shaped, and supported the Association, enabling it to flourish and evolve to where it is today. Sylvia Paish Memorial Bursary

Sylvia Paish was a former President and Member of the PDMA, and a long-time contributor to music and education in the Oceanside community. After her death in 2014, the Sylvia Paish Memorial Bursary was established in her honor, supporting young musicians and vocalists at Ballenas and Kwalicum Secondary Schools.
