Sing, Swing and Sway to the Music

Pops Choir

Founded in September 2025 and directed by Carole Baker, Oceanside Pops Choir is a mixed-voice pops choral group of men and women that perform arrangements of popular favourites throughout the decades, Top 40 hits and close-harmony vocal jazz. Choral experience is a bonus but not necessary. The only requirement is that singers can sing on pitch. New members can expect an informal audition with Carole for vocal placement.

Rehearsals are September through May on Thursday evenings 7-9pm at St. Edmunds Church, 407 Wembley Rd, Parksville.

Oceanside Pops Choir Musical Director

Carole Baker, B.Mus. B.Ed.

Carole Baker is a retired educator with 32 years of teaching experience, primarily in the Coquitlam School District. As a music educator she taught choir, vocal jazz, band and jazz band to students in grades 9 through 12 that performed both locally and abroad. She was also Music Director of 19 school musicals, overseeing all the vocal work and directing the pit bands for each musical.

Carole’s love for singing and harmonies started at a young age. Her parents were avid barber- shoppers and it wasn’t long before they had a family quartet with mom, dad, sister Cathy, and Carole performing at many office parties and events. Growing up in North Vancouver, Carole was involved in every aspect of music. She was accepted into the Voice Program at UBC in 1984 and continued to foster her love of choral singing. She sang with the UBC Singers under the direction of James Fankhauser, and the Chamber Singers with Courtland Hultberg. In 1986 Carole and two of her voice peers started a women’s a cappella trio that performed professionally throughout BC’s lower mainland. Carole continued singing throughout her teaching career. She joined another professional women’s a cappella trio in 1993 and sang with several other community choirs. After retiring in 2021, Carole continued to work as an educator and vocal clinician in the Tri-Cities and Maple Ridge communities until moving to Parksville with her family in 2023. She joined the Oceanside Concert Band playing tenor saxophone and is now part of the Concert Band Executive. Carole is thrilled to be directing the Oceanside Pops’ Choir and singing and working with members of Oceanside community.
