Music Theory Course – Level 1

Oceanside Music introduces its first music theory course for beginner and experienced musicians wanting to learn to read music. The course is instructed by our Musical Director, Ed Dumas, B.Ed., M.A.Ed., retired educator and band conductor with over 40 years’ experience. Participants will learn:
- Note names
- Base and treble clef
- Note and rest durations
- Rhythm and counting
- 4/4, 3/4 and 2/4 time signatures
- Step and leap motion
- Dotted notes
- Tones & semitones
- Ties and slurs
- Dynamics
- Tempo and style terms
- Repeats
- Articulation markings
- Flats, sharps, and natural signs
- Whole and half steps
- Enharmonic notes
- Tetrachords and major scales
- Chromatic scales
- Scale design names
- Introduction to intervals
- Circle of fifths
Course starts Thursday September 11th and ends Thursday December 11th, 2025. Class time is 7-8pm.
Maximum 36 participants.
Cost = $125 (includes $30 workbook)
